Students participating in the 2009 Science Olympiads began preparation for the competition by contructing an elevated bridge, a Wright Brothers style model plane and a robot with a functioning claw arm. These builds were completed after school during team meetings. At the competition, team members participated in 15 challenging events. During some of the events, the Science Olympians identified fossils, explored the constellations in the UCONN planetarium, utilized litmus paper as Disease Detectives, demonstrated their internet and other computer proficienies as part of "Compute This", and honed their technical writing skills for "Write It/Do It".
Thanks to the 2009 Science Olympiad coaches, Mr. Salas and Mrs. Hatch, and to the chaperones that accompanied the team to UCONN for the day's competition.
