Grade 7 ROPE - Rite of Passage Experience The Rite of Passage Experience , also known as ROPE , is a school and community-based initiative designed to guide children in grades 6-12 though adolescence and into adulthood while avoiding the pitfalls of alcohol, drugs and negative peer pressure.
It integrates the lessons of our ancestors with contemporary social and behavioral science to mobilize the community, within a common language and shared emotional experience, to employ its resources to help its children grow up well and become healthy, happy, responsible adults. http://www.rope.org/ROPE.asp
At St. Mary's, seventh grade students experience ROPE with trained facilitators that guide them through exercises throughout the school year. The experience culminates with a day spent at the Simsbury Farms high ropes course. Mrs. Gillen, our 7th grade homeroom teacher observed the following: "They started out as many...and at the end of this journey, they are one. I feel that everything they have learned and practiced came together for them on Friday. They talked about teamwork, trusting one another, feeling safe with each other and how they would miss their time together. Thank you Blair, Mrs. Mortillaro and Mrs. Whittemore for your time, expertise and love of our students."
